Pinterest Hacks – The Practical Edition

Ingredients for homemade window cleaner

I love to test hacks that I find on Pinterest!  This is the start of a new series on the blog.  This is the practical edition because I needed these two items in the last couple of weeks.  I’ll test much more exciting things in the future I’m sure.  Like floor cleaner.  Kidding.  I hope.

Recently I ran out of dishwasher detergent. Since I will make practically anything before I drive to the store I obviously turned to Pinterest to figure out how to make the detergent.  I used to make it years ago but couldn’t remember the recipe that I used. However, I found this solution that is much easier.  I slightly doubted that it would work but I had literally nothing to lose.  The article suggested I put two drops – and two drops only – of Dawn dish detergent in the dishwasher and then sprinkle baking soda on the bottom of the dishwasher.  It worked like a charm.  Seriously, I was impressed and have been trying it for a few weeks now.  I’m not adding dishwasher detergent to my shopping list again.  This has to be way cheaper and it’s easy. Pinterest Win!

Since I’m sure my husband doesn’t read this blog I can tell you that it took months of me nagging  politely asking him to clean the windows before he caved in on Sunday and did it.  But…there was just a smidge of window cleaner left in the bottle!  Unbelievable! He used what was there and wanted to stop but I happily said I could whip up some window cleaner in a jiffy.  Pinterest to the rescue again.  It was so easy to make and took less than five minutes!  I used this recipe which called for cornstarch.  It says that it prevents streaking but you just need to shake the bottle every so often to keep it from settling.  It worked without streaking. Again, this has to be way cheaper than buying it and most people have the ingredients on hand already.  Give it a try, you might like it! Pinterest Win!

Can’t wait to make window cleaner. Not buying any more cleaning products w/chemicals.
