Yurt Camping at Sweetwater Creek State Park

Last weekend we enjoyed a girl’s camping trip at Sweetwater Creek State Park.  Friends told us great things about the new yurts so we wanted to give them a try.  There are ten yurts available to rent.  They all have a front and back deck and they are very cool!

We were in yurt 10 which is at the very end and furthest from the playground.  However, if you are looking for privacy try to rent yurt #1.  We scoped it out and it is set apart from the others with more privacy.  Our yurt was very close to our neighbors grilling and picnic area.

This is yurt #1. These campers were smart and brought along extra tables and a tent also.

If you have kids and want to be near the playground then yurt 4, 5, or 6 would be good.  Yurt 6 is closest to the bathrooms (and the parking lot)

The yurt sleeps six people with a bunk bed that sleeps four and a futon that sleeps two.

The furniture is very pretty and rustic.  There is a nice center table with storage underneath and four bar stools.  Also, there are a three side tables that we set up our coffee maker on and had all of our food organized.

Camping  with five women means that we set up house quickly and it looked great!

The top of the yurt opens for good airflow. There are screened doors and windows and a ceiling fan but if it gets cool at night there is a heater.

Also, camping with my friends means that we eat well all day long!  My friend made the most amazing chicken salad!  I will ask her for the recipe and hopefully share it on the blog.  I love to try chicken salad everywhere I go and I’m always looking for the perfect one.  I found it right here on my camping trip! We also enjoyed salsa, chicken nuggets and kale salad.

The yurt camping area is secured by a gate that requires a code.  There is a keypad for opening the gate, the gate will not open if you drive up to it.  The keypad is located outside the gate on the left.  Be sure to contact the park prior to 4:30 pm if you won’t arrive before 5:00 pm.  The entire area is clean and pretty quiet.  You don’t have to worry about your belongings because the yurt also has a secure door code.

The lake is very nice but we didn’t see a clear path from our yurt to the lake so we didn’t venture down to it.

The bathrooms are very clean and not too far from each yurt.

The playground is nice with a covered gathering area nearby.

You will need to buy your firewood from Sweetwater when you check in.  We purchased two bags which was just enough for two campfires.  We tried the fire starters that I made and they worked great!

There is plenty to do at Sweetwater Creek State Park including hiking, boat rental, paddle boarding, and fishing.  We chose to hike to the mill ruins.

The hike is beautiful and there are many different trails that you can choose from.

It was a beautiful day on Saturday so there were lots of people on the trail enjoying the day.

The yurts are $85 per night and you are allowed two cars per yurt.  Sweetwater Creek State Park is located about 20 minutes west of Atlanta.

Yurt camping was a great experience!  I would highly recommend Sweetwater Creek State Park!  (and the chicken salad!)
