As you all know, Crystal and I and our families vacationed in Captiva at the beginning of April. Check out all of the posts here. We did a lot of research prior to the trip and knew there were Jerry’s and Baileys, Grocery Options in Sanibel, Florida. Jerry’s and Bailey’s. We went to both. Well truth be told, we went to Jerry’s a couple of times, and Russell and I stopped at Bailey’s on the day we left, just for you all! I wanted to be able to compare the two.
We were quite surprised to find a General Store and Provisions store on Captiva, which both provided options for groceries without having to go back to Sanibel. We will post more details on these in a later.
When Russell and I arrived (we flew in from the DC area), we stopped at Publix in Fort Myers like everyone online suggested. There were several Publix stores in between the airport and Sanibel. We picked up the basic needs we thought we would need for the week. We had decided not to buy meat at this point, since we had quite a while before we were to be able to check into our house. Crystal and her family drove from the Atlanta area, and also stopped at Publix. Since Crystal and her family drove, we had put together a list of several things that she was going to bring with her. Cereal, Paper Towels, Toilet Paper, Snacks, Juice boxes, Waters, K-Cups, etc.
Once on Sanibel, Russell and I stopped at Jerry’s. I was very impressed with the whole area. I hadn’t realized it was a shopping center with several stores. Jerry’s also has a full service restaurant inside. We had lunch there that day, and actually went back with Crystal’s family and had lunch another day. The food there was good and the prices were quite reasonable. I don’t remember what we all got to eat but here are the pictures we took. I believe it is a BLT, some kind of wrap, patty melt, fried shrimp, and fried clams. I also had a tuna melt the first day and Russell had a BLT. Everything we had there was really good. The French fries were really good too!
We were able to find everything we needed at Jerry’s. Crystal and I ran through there and were finished quickly. They have an amazing deli counter (one night we got fried chicken from there and it was pretty good), a nice bakery, good produce, great meat selection, and they sell beer and wine in the actual store. I was curious about that (Maryland does not sell beer and wine in grocery stores, but Virginia and West Virginia do, so I was curious if Florida did).
Our online research prepared us that prices on the islands in stores like Jerry’s and Baileys were going to be high, but honestly they aren’t really. Granted I live in the DC area and Crystal lives in the Atlanta area – so maybe we have high prices where we live? I mean, yes, things were a bit more expensive than normal, but really not that much higher.
The shopping center that Jerry’s is in has a cute courtyard area with all sorts of birds in cages. We spent some time checking out the birds.
There was also an ice cream store The Love Boat Ice Cream which I am embarrassed to admit how many times we went there that week. Ok, now, if it had been on Captiva, we would have been there probably daily!
Bailey’s was a bit off the main drag. I don’t think I preferred either store to the other, other than location. Jerry’s is more convenient, in my opinion. We did stop, but only purchased coffees and some raspberries. There are some cute stores in that shopping center. There is an ice cream store which was closed when we were there, and a few shops. There was an artisan show going on the day we were there.
Both stores offer delivery services, which we did not try. I hope this helps you plan your groceries for your upcoming trips to Captiva and Sanibel.
