Crystal shared this amazing post with you last week and we thought maybe we should do a DC/Maryland edition. I live in Frederick, Maryland, but I will cover some experiences in Maryland, DC, Virginia, West Virginia, Delaware and Pennsylvania. These states are all kind of mashed together. Unfortunately, I haven’t actually participated in all of these activities but when I have I will tell you!
Preakness is a big deal in Maryland. What is Preakness you may ask? Wikipedia has loads of info. Basically Preakness is the second jewel for the Triple Crown race and is held two weeks after the Kentucky Derby and three weeks before the Belmont Stakes. I have never been to the Preakness, but when I was in College at Towson in Baltimore, I had loads of friends who went. It is a great place to break out all of your fancy hats!
There are a lot of sources for making the person package. This one seems great.
The Treehouse Camp
This place looks great, and their website drives my dog crazy!! Be sure your sound is up 🙂 You can even rent a Hobbit House!
Staying in a Lockhouse on the C&O Canal
This looks really cool! Lockhouse 10, which was built in 1830 and originally remodeled by NPS crews in the twentieth century, has been furnished to evoke the 1930s, including its period kitchen and bathroom. It is located on the Clara Barton Parkway inside the Capital Beltway and offers proximity to numerous attractions in the Washington, DC area. .
They have some amazing classes available for all ages! I would love to take one! My sister is quite mosaicist (spelling?)
Graffiti Art Class
I saw this advertised and thought it sounded so fun! They have classes every Saturday in DC. Look on Groupon, they have them for $79.
A mixology class sounds like a lot of fun! It would be fun with your spouse or even some girlfriends. The one linked here through LivingSocial looks fun and is for One Route Catering.
The DC zoo has zoolights each year.
Ugly Sweater 5k
How fun is that! Be sure to check it out. This race seems to be offered all over, not just DC, so be sure to check your area! Your pups can even play!
This is pretty self-explanatory. The Tea Cellar at the Park Hyatt in Washington is one option, I am sure there are options in all cities.
I took a Bike Tour in Central Park a couple of years ago and loved it, I am sure this would be a lot of fun! This again is something that can most likely be found in every city.
Family Drive-In Package
The Hollywood Casino opened a few years ago. There have always been horse races but the casino is newer. They have a hotel as well. The only thing I will say, there is smoking at the casino – if you prefer non-smoking go to the Maryland Live Casino. I wish West Virginia would pass the no smoking laws in bars etc.
There are a few options nearby Whitetail (PA), Liberty (PA), Ski Roundtop (PA), Wisp (MD), Wintergreen (VA), Canaan Valley (WV), Snowshoe (WV), Massanutten (VA), Bryce (VA), and Timberline (WV). You would think I actually skied (I Don’t! – though I have)
We typically go to Bethany Beach, but there is Rehoboth and Dewey as well.
Any and Everywhere
I have often given movie ticket gift cards to my nephews. I think it is great to include enough for popcorn and snacks, and maybe a restaurant gift card too (do your research and make sure you pick a restaurant near the theater and one that they like!). Gift cards for shopping is always a great idea! And they always fit!
Crystal did this with her friends and shared it on the blog, ever since I have wanted to try it. It hasn’t happened just yet, but it will! There are a few in this area DC, VA, MD, Another MD, Another VA, DE, Another DE, WV, PA. As you can see there are several options, just google “escape room” and add the area you are looking in.
I have posted about Paint Nite before, but I think this is a great gift. It seems to be available pretty much anywhere. Their site also offers other experiences. Also never pay full price – always do a quick search on RetailMeNot to get a discount code.
Sports Tickets and Concerts
Are you shopping for a sports fanatic? If so find tickets to a game for their favorite team. I have always wanted to buy away game Redskins tickets for Russell, and one day (maybe this year) I will. Also, one year I bought tickets for a hockey game – we don’t watch hockey, but I feel like live sporting events are always fun!
Same for a concert, see if their favorite band is coming to your area.
