We have had Lilly three weeks now and I am already sewing for her. I promise this will stop because I do not intend to dress her in outfits. It’s just not my thing. But the neighbor dog has a bandana and it looks rather spiffy so I thought I would try one. I found this pattern on the Pitter & Glink website.
The bandana is super fast to make, well under 30 minutes and it takes minimal fabric. It’s cheap and easy so it speaks my language.
I chose two contrasting fabrics so Lilly could change her look up when she wants. I cut the triangles 14″ x 11″ x 11″. Lilly weighs about 53 pounds and this measurement seems to fit well. Granted I’m not really sure of the fashion rules for a dog bandana but it looks like it’s the right fit.
Be sure to measure the width of the dog collar because the collar will slide through the bandana therefore you will need to make the opening wide enough. This collar is 1″ wide so I made the opening about 2″ wide just so it has plenty of space and I don’t have to fight with it.
Put the two triangles right sides together and sew the long seam then press it to one side.
Next, fold one corner in and press. This is the part that will create the opening for the collar so I folded this corner up about two inches. Sew a 1/4″ seam and then repeat for the other side. Trim the excess fabric.
Now fold the bandana right sides together and sew the other two sides closed.
You will be able to pull it right side out through the open collar area.
Press the bandana and add an optional top stitch. I completely forgot to add the top stitch when I made this yesterday but I will go back to add that. It gives it a more polished look and keeps the seams nice after it’s washed.
You can see how easily the collar slides through the opening.
As I mentioned previously, I have never dressed a dog before. So, I first put it on like this. Lilly was giving me the side eye like I was a complete idiot. She didn’t want to look like super dog with a cape so I turned it around.
I think it’s cute but I just don’t think this will be an everyday thing. I’m doing good to get myself dressed. But for special occasions…whatever those may be…I think we will add the bandana.
