I posted some pictures from this trip back in December and realized that I never really posted a review.
We were invited to join a group of friends for this trip to celebrate a birthday! I didn’t pick the location, but was very pleased with the location. So much so, that Russell and I are planning a trip for this year. I now judge everywhere by the standard we experienced in October!
We booked with April. I am mixed about using a travel agent. If you are a person who doesn’t like to research, then absolutely, use a travel agent. I personally, like to plan and research so that is why I am mixed about it. I am a bit of a control freak as well 🙂 April was great with giving us advice and I might ask her to compare some places for Russell and my trip we are planning for November of this year.
Excellence Playa Mujeres (EPM) is known as the luxury oasis of Cancun. From their website:
Explore the dramatic setting of an all-inclusive oasis, set along an untouched peninsula between the Caribbean and wetlands preserve. Excellence Playa Mujeres’ setting is as stunning as it is exclusive, on a two-mile stretch of powdery virgin white sand moments from the nightlife of Cancun and Cancun International Airport.
This adults only retreat sits near an inland marina and a spectacular Greg Norman signature golf course. The world-class Miilé Spa will take your breath away—and your cares. Ten international restaurants will delight you with gourmet cuisine. And our all-inclusive activities, on land and sea, will see to it that you’re never bored.
At Excellence Playa Mujeres, everything is taken care of and nothing is left out. Create those moments you dream of… and memories you’ll have forever.
The resort is located north of mainland Cancun and is adults-only. The secluded location is part of the appeal, being away from the popular and heavily populated Hotel Zone. The secluded location, means you pretty much stay here. Fine by me! Who would want to leave this place? I will cover activities on site and offsite in a later post.
The hotel is built around gardens and water features with pools and a lazy river. All circling the spa and restaurant buildings. The service and the staff are, indeed, EXCELLENT. They are all so friendly there and accommodating. They want you happy!
I didn’t label this map – so my room was actually in 8A, but I like it.
Every suite at EPM is an excellent retreat – chic, contemporary and alluring. They are all 5 star and are 807 square feet or larger, with an extra-wide sectional sofa, flat-screen TV, private round Jacuzzi with indoor and outdoor access and a four-poster bed situated to take advantage of gorgeous views.
All rooms at EPM have a few qualities: large couch and a TV viewing area, a Jacuzzi that opens into the room and to the outside, air conditioning (duh!), wireless internet, DVD player, iPod doc, minibar, and 24-hour room service and an X-box. They do provide an upcharge option that they call Excellence Club (EC).

Junior Suites (non swim up) are in the upper levels of the buildings, below the top level. These rooms are on the interior of the resort and give a view the spa or the pool.
Junior Swim-up Suites are on the lower levels of all buildings. Calling it a swim-up is a bit untruthful! They are really WALK OUT rooms. These all have pool or spa view. Privacy could be a concern since the pools provide full view into your room.
Two-Story Rooftop Terrace Suites. Obviously these are the top floors. These rooms still overlook the pool or spa. The real bonus is the hydrospa pool that comes with the room. Your own pool! There are rooms in this category that aren’t really two-story as well.
We had EC Junior Swim-Up Suites. We would book this type again, just not sure we would splurge for EC – other than location options! We really liked being able to go in and out of our room from the slider as opposed to the main door which required key card. Although, on that note – our room was open A LOT. For the most part, we were right in the pool so the room was secure, but the times we spent at the beach – or room ultimately was wide open. We had no issues with this or any theft. People complain about lack of convenient entrance to the pools (like steps). They only have ladders…but once I got used to this fact, it didn’t phase me.
I didn’t make this handy map – but it is great! I got it off of the “We Love Excellence Playa Mujeres” board on facebook (Highly recommended if you are going!).
This is a cool picture from the facebook group as well. Our door way is right under 8162.
This picture is taken from a roof-top terrace in building 8A. Our rooms aren’t in this picture, but if they were, it would be in the upper right hand corner – you can see the hammocks.
We were in building 8A Room 8062, with friends in 8061, 8060, and 8059. I HIGHLY recommend this room, and will request it when I return. You best not take it from me though!
The view in our room looking through the slider.
The front hallway. You can see building 8B and their suites.
Standing in the lawn by the pool looking toward our back patio and slider.
Standing in our front door way looking toward the EC pool and Building 8B.
Someone please come build me a shower like this one! I loved the shower, and probably took more showers in a week than normal, because it was so fabulous! The shower had two shower heads, one was handheld and kind of standard and one was a rain shower. One thing EPM gets flack for is the lack of privacy in the bathroom. I can’t imagine enjoying this room if I was with anyone other than my spouse! The toilet is in its’ own little room with a glass door that is only partially frosted.
This picture from Oyster.com shows the bathroom well.
Kelli’s room (8061 – right next to ours) was decked out for her birthday!
Room 8059 and our fabulous friends!
The flowers in our room when we arrived.
The mini bar – EC. We didn’t make any special requests, but you can. I don’t know, to us, we would just go to a bar and get a drink as opposed to making it ourselves!
Stay tuned for further review of this fabulous resort including Dining, Spa and Activities.
