Visiting the Four Corners Monument

Four Corners Monument

Our summer road trip across America took us to the Four Corners Monument.  I have always been curious about the monument and I have traveled near it but have never been prior to this trip.  I wanted to make sure to incorporate this into our road trip this year.

Earlier that morning we left Flagstaff, Arizona and went to the East Entrance of the Grand Canyon (also known as Desert View).  That was a beautiful drive from Flagstaff to the Grand Canyon.  When we left the Grand Canyon and headed towards the four corners I knew it was going to be a long drive with not many services but I think I underestimated how long of a drive it was!  The drive was nice, the road was as straight as it could get and there wasn’t much traffic.  Be sure to get gas when you see it and have plenty of water with you.  If you break down you will need it!  Also, when you see a restaurant…go ahead and eat there!  We ate breakfast at the Grand Canyon and didn’t eat the rest of the day except for some amazing beef jerky that my dad made for us and other snacks we had in the car!

As you are approaching the Four Corners you will see clearly marked signs on the main roads so finding the monument is not a problem at all.  (At least entering from Arizona, I’m sure the other directions are well-marked also).  Let me tell you, it was a welcome sign to see.  We were ready to get out of the car for sure!

Be sure to check the website for the operating times on the dates you want to go.  As you can see from the sign above it looks like they may change the operating times.  The fee to enter is $5.00 per person.  I had cash on hand because I wasn’t sure if they took credit cards but from the entrance sign it looks like they have the credit card logos.  I just knew I didn’t want to drive all that way and not be able to get in!  I can’t even imagine.

We thought the parking signs were fun.  Parking was full in Arizona so we had to go to Utah!

It was hot when we were there.  It was about 102 degrees with very little shade.  The only shade was around the edges where the markets were.  It is very limited.  The sun is also very bright so my suggestions are to have good sunglasses with you and an umbrella if you are sensitive to the sun.  Also, take a few bottles of water with you if you are traveling in the summer.  I’m sure the wait time to have your picture taken varies but we were there mid-day and it was very crowded.  We waited about 30 minutes in the sun to have our picture taken.  There is a sign stating the limitation on pictures for each family.  People seemed to be very respectful and not overdo their time.  We made friends with a great family behind us and they took our pictures and we did theirs.

There are rows of markets around each side so that is a good way to pass the time if one family member stays in line while the others take turns to look around.

The pictures are fun but it’s a challenge to be fast with the pictures and also get in all four states!

We considered eating at the one food vendor that they had there but again…the heat was intense.  So, we opted not to eat there.  I’m not sure if the vendor is there all the time though.  I had done some reading beforehand and I was not expecting any food to be available so I wouldn’t count on it.

When we were leaving it was kinda fun to see everyone heading off in different directions going to the states of their choice.  We headed to Colorado from the Four Corners!

It is a fun place to visit!  If you are planning a road trip to the general area it’s good to incorporate this into your itinerary!
